How to Keep Track of Where Your Art is on the Internet©

This week’s “Art Only SpokenHere” email question asks, “How does one keep track of one’s arts and crafts onthe internet when you have more than one URL and do you have any suggestions?”

Good question and I know whatyou are talking about. In the beginning of selling on the internet we had thesame problem and we finally solved it by creating links from our main websiteto our on-line galleries. I keep sayingI am going to re-do our website, but unless I find another 3 or 4 hours in myday it will be awhile until I get to it. However, what we have now works for us.

In the event you are justcreating your first directional page or a “hub” as this is often referred tothen here are some suggestions. Createa single page on your website or art Blog and we will call this called your“hub sales page”. On this page lay out“labels” to what you are selling such as “Original art”, “Clearance Sales”,“Buy my Books”, “Buy eBooks” and whatever other things or places you want todirect your potential buyer to. Try tokeep in as simple as you can without any mission statements or a lot of words.

Remember these “labels” allneed to be hyperlinked to where you want them to go. An example for me would be if I wanted apotential buyer of my Whimsy YardArt© birdfeeders and fountains that I make outof recycled objects then that hyperlink would go directly to the main gallerypage of where I sell them on line. Oncethe potential buyer gets there, he or she will be able to look at the picturesof all of them I have created and see which ones have sold and which ones arefor sale. It is often good to show someas sold as it gives validity to your items. The buyer can then click on the onethey like and hopefully purchase it. Theimportant trade secret of on-line marketing is to remember that potentialbuyers are only good for 3 clicks before they wander away so you want the thirdclick to be where they can make a decision to make the purchase.

Make sure the second clickthat takes the potential buyer to the main gallery page is full of pictures ofwhat you are selling and that means you should make sure you have good picturesthat show your work at its best. Itoften means taking pictures outside in the sun light keeping your shadow out ofthe picture, it means having them at about 300 resolutions and the pixeldimensions should be between 700 and 1000 unless the gallery website is tellingyou different. Pay heed to what theirdimensions are as some galleries will want smaller and some allow very largeones. However, most at the dimensions Ijust quoted will allow the potential buyer to click on the picture and it willautomatically enlarge it. Some galleriescollect the purchase price for you and hold it until the buyer gets the item,then sending you your money less their commission and others like Etsy whocharges no commission other than the .20 cent listing fee will just allow thebuyer to purchase it and pay immediately via PayPal so you must have a PayPalaccount which is very easy and free to obtain. This safe and secure method is a real boon to the on-line seller becauseit allows buyers without PayPal accounts to use their credit cards.

When: April 1 – Sept. 30, 2011 (Every Tuesdays and/or Thursday, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.) — Come either evening or both evenings. Learn everything you need to know about soft pastels. Basic and advanced techniques will be covered while you work from still-life set-ups, figure models, in studio and plein air, landscape, and cityscapes views. Demonstrations and lectures will focus on, use of light and its effect on color, techniques, types of pastels available, use of different papers to create various effects, fixing and transporting finished drawings, and important safety issues.

Workshop fee: $495.00

You do the math. That is 52 nights x 3 hours per night = 468 hours of instruction which is less than $1.17 per hour divided by 2 students = less than 60 cents per hour for instruction. At the end of that time you will have received more instruction, learned more and paid far less than any other year of instruction in anything including a college course. The artist says, "October 31, 1986 was the last time I saw my good business friend and mentor, the late and great Warren G. Harding. I had just done a grand slam that year and had won every award the Academy of Real Estate had to give and was granted the ACE designation. The following April I experienced a huge financial disappointment in the Texas Bank Crash and was talking with Warren without realizing it would probably be the last conversation he and I would ever have and those last words of his were, "Some Times the Dragon Wins."

I have thought of those words often and after closing my real estate consulting practice in 1992 I often thought of how to put those words into a painting. 23 years later this painting represents my final idea.

The Knight stands weary, his sword has drawn blood, his head is bowed as he stands with one foot in this world and one foot out of it. All the eyes of the universe are watching as "Sometimes the Dragon Wins."
